Près du dixième de la population mondiale consommerait des aliments produits en utilisant des eaux usées. Étant donné la croissance démographique et le fait que davantage deau douce est détournée vers les villes pour la consommation domestique dont 70 % repart en eaux usées , le recours aux eaux usées est appelé à augmenter, tant en volumes quen superficies irriguées.

The National Alliance on ICTs for Basic Human Needs is the nodal agency for Mission 2007 and has released its report Steps Forward on how to take ICTs to all Indian villages for empowering the people and bringing about development in the villages.

OneWorld South Asia will inaugurate its studio - Ek Duniya Audio Studio - on Saturday which will allow non governmental organisations to produce development communication programmes. The studio will enable radio to be used effectively as a development communication medium and empower the communities.

Special Advisor to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and director, Earth Institute at Columbia University Jeffrey D Sachs, in his new book - The End of Poverty Economic Possibilities for Our Time says that removing poverty is immensely possible within our lifetimes. The book, which has a foreword by Bono, provides a blueprint for eliminating extreme poverty from the world by year 2025.

The Dominican Republic - Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) is a threat to poor people in developing countries, said international agency Oxfam today, as the presidents of five Central American countries and the Dominican Republic are meeting with President Bush. The six presidents have just completed an unprecedented road show to convince US citizens and their lawmakers to support the Free Trade Agreement between their countries and the US, but opposition to the agreement is mounting.

The European Union agreed Tuesday to set concrete timetables for fulfilling a promise the world's richer countries made in 1970 to allocate 70 cents of every $100 of national incomes to aid for poor countries. The move, which would double European aid by 2010, is expected to give a massive jolt to poor countries seeking to finally throw off the yoke of poverty.

In India, residents, political parties, and environmentalists are protesting proposals to build a new water-intensive Coca-Cola bottling plant in a community already suffering water shortages. Coca-Cola's reputation for groundwater depletion and pollution has fuelled suspicion of the proposed plant.

UNICEF announced Wednesday a partnership with Proctor and Gamble to provide home-based water purification systems for millions in poor countries around the world. The alliance will focus on bringing safe drinking water to schools, helping families in emergency situations, and reducing household exposure to arsenic-contaminated water.

Despite skepticism that they could ever succeed observers of the global debt crisis now predict that 100% cancellation for poor countries is within reach--possibly as soon as this summer. At the same time barriers lie ahead for the debt relief movement and developing nations even in a post-debt-relief era, writes analyst Mark Engler of Foreign Policy in Focus.
