Current sanitation systems will not help in reaching the Millennium Development Goal, concluded experts at the recent meet of the World Toilet Association (WTA) at Seoul. Flush toilets have to become eco-friendly as newer ways to dispose human waste get developed.

Muhammad Yunus, Nobel laureate and founder of the Grameen Bank, says Bangladesh will eradicate poverty by 2030 and wants India to take up the challenge as well. On a recent visit to India, he spoke on the banks role, poverty museums, and issues close to his heart.

The Indian government will collect data on more than half a million villages over the next six months to help ensure better development. Even after 60 years of Independence, there is a dearth of information on the real condition of villages where more than 70% of the population lives.

One month after a new national policy on resettlement and rehabilitation was announced, the Indian government has to still make it public. In his scathing critique, Shripad Dharmadhikary, a coordinator of Manthan Adhyayan Kendra, finds many limitations and loopholes in the policy, saying that big industries and developers stand to benefit more than the affected people.

The second Internet Governance Forum that opened at Rio de Janeiro discussed ways to use the Internet for development, among other critical issues. The four-day event is being promoted by the United Nations and will be attended by over thousand participants from the governments, private sector, NGOs, academics and the technical communities.

The performance of the South Asian countries is offset by persisting gender inequality with the significant exception of Sri Lanka, reveals the recent Global Gender Gap Report 2007 released by the World Economic Forum. The report advocates a multi-stakeholder community approach to tackle its various challenges and opportunities while being a benchmark tool for policy makers to define national priorities.
