The National Commission on Farmers has called for credit reforms in the farm sector to prevent farmers from committing suicide. It has suggested reducing the interest rate on farm credit and asked for a census of suicides for a proper understanding of the situation.

Agriculture economists expressed their concern at the slowdown in agriculture growth and said that the biggest challenge facing the sector was lack of public and private investment. Noted scientist MS Swaminathan said that the country is not doing much for farmers while China is way ahead in the race.

The police in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu prevented anti-PVC demonstrators from starting their march citing orders from the Madras High court. It was found out later that the court had not passed any such orders and that some PVC companies had given wrong information to the police to stop the march. The march had been organised by farmers and local NGOs.

The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime reports an anticipated 21 percent drop in poppy cultivation in Afghanistan this year, due mainly to tougher law enforcement and a large-scale eradication campaign. For the decline to persist, however, the policy must stay the course, the report added.
