09.09.2005 The police in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu prevented anti-PVC demonstrators from starting their march citing orders from the Madras High court. It was found out later that the court had not passed any such orders and that some PVC companies had given wrong information to the police to stop the march. The march had been organised by farmers and local NGOs.

Afghanistan’s 2005 opium harvest season has come to a close.
09.09.2005 The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime reports an anticipated 21 percent drop in poppy cultivation in Afghanistan this year, due mainly to tougher law enforcement and a large-scale eradication campaign. For the decline to persist, however, the policy must stay the course, the report added.
