India has finally imposed a ban on cattle drug diclofenac that had almost caused the extinction of vultures in the country in under two decades. While harmless to cattle, the drug causes fatal kidney and liver damage to vultures that feed on animal carcasses.

The Indian Meteorological department has said that the south Indian state of Kerala will get the monsoon on time. Timely arival of rains is important for Indian farmers as large parts of the country are irrigated by the seasonal rains and unpredictable monsoon can wreak havoc on the small and marginal farmer.

The Indian government started importing wheat early this year despite the fact that stocks were over the buffer level and procurement was to begin in April. An investigation by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) finds that the US is involved in the import of wheat into India - a policy that could spell disaster for the country.
