Suicides by farmers in the west Indian state of Maharashtra have been on the rise despite a relief package announced by the Indian Prime Minister. In northern Maharashtra the number of farmer suicides in 2006 has inched close to the cumulative figure for the past four years.

People from the states of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, UP, West Bengal, New Delhi and other parts of India joined farmers from the Narmada valley at Rajghat, near Badwani in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, to protest against the displacement and submergence of villages by the waters of the Narmada dam. Two IIT Madras professors protested the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a convention held at the institute's campus. Modi was the chief guest at the inaugural of the Third Convention of the National Alliance for Mission 2007: Every Village A Knowledge Centre, organised by the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Microsoft and the Nasscom Foundation, among others. Kolkata newspaper The Telegraph reports.

According to various reports, the 14-hour meeting on Sunday 23 July amongst the G6 -- US, EU, Japan, Brazil, India, Australia -- ministers ended in the early hours of the Monday morning. Ministers did not even get around to discussing NAMA.
