Community Radio in Pondicherry
25.09.2006 The Group of Ministers (GoM), which has been assigned the task of ironing out differences within the Union Cabinet on amendments to the community radio regime, has cleared the changes proposed by the Union Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry. This includes the contentious issue of allowing advertisements on such radio stations.

21.09.2006 OneWorld South Asia extends an invitation to join the opening of phone-based Information and Knowledge Exchange Service for Rural Communities. This would be inaugurated on 28th September 2006, at the Jacaranda Hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, between 1000 hrs – 1300 hrs followed by lunch.

06.09.2006 Greenpeace International released findings that show illegal GE (genetically engineered) rice from China has contaminated food products in France, Germany and the UK. Greenpeace has notified authorities that the illegal GE rice poses serious health risks and calls upon European governments to take immediate action to protect consumers.

05.09.2006 The Indian Finance Ministry has set up an expert group to look into the growing problem of agricultural indebtedness and suggest relief measures for distressed farmers across the country. The committee will also make recommendations on farmers’ demands for loan waivers, Indian Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar told Parliament on August 24.
