Nandigram in West Bengal has emerged as the lightning rod for criticism of the governments economic policies. While previous clashes here over the proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) have killed at least seven people including a policeman, the events of March 14 put a halt to the West Bengal governments industrialisation bid and has forced a re-think at the national level.

The Indian government has initiated the registration of plant varieties with the Protection of Plant Variety and Farmers Rights Authority (PPV&FRA) to provide them globally-recognised protection against piracy. The government plans to register 12 varieties of crop that will provide protection to farmers and farm communities to evolve, preserve and refine crop varieties.
