Relief workers from Peace Winds, global partner of U.S. aid agency Mercy Corps, are providing emergency shelter for people displaced by the earthquake in Japan. With the roads impassable and most houses still without power and running water, the Peace WindsÂ’ shelters will be home to many of the victims for the next few weeks.

This much we know: more than twelve months on, the fighting and insecurity that sent Darfur people fleeing from their homes has not stopped. Relief workers do not know when the situation will improve but they plan to provide emergency aid till October 2005 and to help people rebuild their lives when they return to their villages.

Almost two weeks after the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) ended its military operations in GazaÂ’s Jabalia camp, aid workers are still assessing the damages of what is now regarded as the heaviest IDF incursion since the beginning of the second intifada. Apart from damaged homes and the high civilian death toll, many of the campÂ’s residents, including the sick and the injured, were confined to their homes for 12 days during the operation.

Mercy Corps, the U.S.-based non-profit, has launched a milk collection center in Kosovo to provide a ready sales point for dairy farmers. The project is part of the organizationÂ’s Multi Ethnic Return and Reintegration Program which seeks to facilitate post-conflict resettlement by providing guaranteed income base for returnee families.

The American Red Cross joins the rest of the humanitarian community to address the struggle of millions suffering from chronic malnourishment in observance of World Food Day this week. The organization is integrating education and training in nutrition, health and water and sanitation interventions into its food delivery program to move people from satisfying hunger to making their lives better.

In addition to Heifer InternationalÂ’s gift of sheep program which benefits women around the world, the organization now offers a pre- and post-natal sheep and lamb care program known as WomenÂ’s Lambing Experience.
