Just days before the G8 summit, taking place next week in Scotland, international development organization, ActionAid has hit out at the developed nations for providing aid that serves their corporate interests, pushes privatization in recipient countries, funnels money to rich consultants and leaves the poor countries heavily indebted. The World Bank has approved of a US $3 million grant to Nepal for its Economic Reform Technical Assistance Project which intends to strengthen home-grown reforms in the areas of public sector capacity, service delivery, social inclusion, governance, and reducing unproductive public sector intervention in the economy.

Some of the world's most famous monuments--from St. Paul's Cathedral in London to a cotton tree planted by freed slaves in Sierra Leone--will be adorned with massive white cloths Friday as worldwide parties and demonstrations launch the first mass action in what many expect to be the largest anti-poverty campaign ever. A new report by the Brookings Institution shows President Bush has significantly exaggerated the amount of aid his administration has provided to sub-Saharan Africa. With the approaching G8 summit and recent aid commitments made by E.U. nations, Bush is facing increasing pressure to be more cooperative internationally and encourage the efforts of poor countries.

La campagne Abolissons la pauvreté est heureuse d'apprendre que le Canada accueillera un concert Live 8 le 2 juillet. Cette date est stratégique puisque le concert aura lieu avant la rencontre du G8 en Écosse. « Plus d'un milliard de personnes vivent dans la pauvreté extrême. Chaque jour, 50 000 d'entre elles meurent de causes liées à la pauvreté. Paul Foreman et Vincent Hoedt ont été arrêtés à la fin du mois de mai. Tous deux étaient accusés de publication de fausses informations, de nuisances envers la société soudanaise et d’espionnage, suite à la publication en mars du rapport "L'écrasant fardeau du viol: violence sexuelle au Darfour". Ils avaient été relâchés sous caution et n’avaient pas été autorisés à quitter le pays.

The Get on Board Bus departed the southern tip of Africa nearly three months ago en route to Scotland for the July 6 G8 Summit. The travelers arrived at 10 Downing Street in London this week, where they were met by the next G8 President, Tony Blair, who received the messages from Africans collected by the team along the journey.

Aid agencies and doctors are calling on Coalition forces in Iraq to allow them safe access to Karabila, where hundreds require medical treatment and thousands of families have run out of food and water. Since the June 17 launch of 'Operation Spear'--designed to prevent rebels from using the region as a staging post en route from Syria--U.S. forces have prohibited anyone to enter or leave the village.

The new president of the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz, who returned back after a visit to four African countries, has said that the Bank will focus on development in Africa. The Bank's other priorities include supporting equal rights for women to help foster ecnomic growth.

New research by Christian Aid finds that sub-Saharan Africa lost billions of dollars after being forced to open their markets to imports. In 20 years, trade liberalization cost Africa the same amount it received in aid--money that as income could have eliminated Africa's debt and been invested in agriculture, health, and education.

A party line vote in Congress Friday ended hope for the most recent measure to unlock $34 million for the UN Population Fund. $134 million has already been held up over four years, ostensibly to send a message to China, reports PlanetWire, while women and families in 140 other countries continue to suffer.
