Orissa has initiated e-Pragati, a project that would connect even the remotest Anganwadi workers in the state and publish information on their work profiles and children under their care. The venture will complement the existing e-Shishu plan that cyber connects lakhs of children in state.

India's Information and Technology Department will provide computer training to children belonging to socially deprived and minority groups. The first initiative has been taken by the city of Chandigarh in association with United Progressive Muslim Front to teach a basic course to the students of Manimajra Madarsa.

Freelance journalist Ratna Bharali Talukdar, based in the north east Indian state of Assam, says that the midday meal scheme is an attraction for children in the primary schools in rural Assam. Even school headmasters agree with its impact in increasing attendance but also put forward several challenges in making the scheme work.

Austrian freelance writer Shelley Seale is researching a book - The Weight of Silence: Invisible Children of India - on the countryÂ’s 12 million orphans. She claims that social and economic circumstances increase the vulnerability of the children to the HIV virus which not only depletes the human body but also depletes families and communities of their assets.

Leading processor-maker Intel will soon introduce 'Classmate', a portable computer for children in India. Its pilot project at Delhi Public School, Ghaziabad, near New Delhi is a joint venture with the state education department to introduce interactive education in the classroom. Intel driven Classmate PCs are already being shipped to other developing countries such as Brazil and Mexico.

Reaffirming its commitment to child rights, CRY America has changed its name to Child Rights and You America Inc. The change was announced at a media conference at the Altman building in New York.Addressing the media, Shefali Sunderlal, President, CRY America said, "While the relief approach addresses the symptoms, the rights approach looks at why the problem exists and addresses its root causes".

Economic development is closely associated with poverty reduction in many countries. It is also believed that increased income levels lead to improved health, education and living standards. However, development experiences show that there is no automatic link between increased per capita income and reduction in poverty levels.
