Growing up, I recall my mother hardly being at home. She left for work at ten in the morning and returned home at eleven at night. It wasn't that my mother was neglecting me; she was doing what was needed in order to survive.

Bal Panchayats are the new means to empower children in rural India. These groups of children function at the village level to raise their voices on various social issues that affect their lives. Kalyan Singh Kothari heard them out at a show in Jaipur, Rajasthan on the World Fair Trade Day.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has estimated that over 100 million boys and girls, between the ages of 5-14, work under hazardous conditions in the agriculture sector worldwide. ILO is collaborating with five organisations to eliminate child labour by focusing on World Day Against Child Labour on June 12, 2007.
