The officials from the Nepal Red Cross Society says that the current political situation, strikes and violence in southern Nepal has greatly affected the work of the rescuers and hampering efforts by aid workers to distribute aid to flood victims.

NEW YORK, Aug 28 (OneWorld) - Thousands of protesters are expected to converge on New Orleans Wednesday to raise awareness about what they believe to be the Bush administration's failure to help Americans who lost everything in the wake of a ferocious storm that hit the United States' Gulf Coast some two years ago.

According to the UN Childrens Agency (UNICEF), the rains and cyclone in Pakistan have displaced more than 377,000 people. Tens of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) are now living in makeshift shelters, or in tents provided by the aid agencies.

Weeks of heavy rain flooded over 30 percent of the country and left hundreds of homeless in Bangladesh, which is experiencing some of the worst flooding in recent years and terribly affecting day to day life. The estimation shows around 10 percent of the countrys 80,000 primary schools had been affected due to floods.

ActionAid report on the explosion at an Indian army ammunitions base in South Kashmir, reflects on the impact of blast on the health of the people. It is found that the blaze left three out of four of the displaced ones suffering from sleep disorders. 64 per cent have respiratory tract infections induced by toxic smoke.

The fire at an Indian army ammunitions base in Jammu and Kashmir has made over 30,000 people homeless. According to the officials it could take up to six months to clear the area of unexploded shells.

The devastation caused by monsoon flooding in Bangladesh affected more than 9 million people in 39 districts. Emergency supplies are being provided to hardhit areas by UNICEF, the World Food Programme and non-governmental organizations.

After languishing for 17 years in temporary camps, some 108,000 ethnic Nepalis, expelled from their homeland in Bhutan, have a real chance to get out of the wilderness. But they are really apprehensive of about the details as the dissemination of information is needed to allay their fears who want to opt for resettlement in third countries.

International humanitarian agency Oxfam today urged the governments of India, Bangladesh and Nepal to step up preparedness measures for the floods in the Ganga-Brahmaputra river basin, even as it issued an appeal in the UK to raise funds for its own response to the flood-affected people in the region.
