Sri Lankan governments decision to ease restrictions on fishing in Eastern Province, a territory hitherto controlled by LTTE rebels, will give much needed fillip to the industry a major source of revenue for the countrys exchequer and livelihood for people. It will also help people recover from 2004 tsunami disaster.

With over 100,000 Oliver Ridley turtles dying over the last decade in Orissa in eastern India, Greenpeace has set a target limit of 20% on turtle mortalities for the state government. Despite adequate funds, the state has failed to prevent illegal trawling.

River dolphins of Bangladesh are facing a serious risk of extinction due to over-fishing, shortage of prey, pollution, etc. Efforts are now being made to protect them by monitoring salinity levels of rivers and preventing accidental killings of dolphins by fishermen.

Hundreds of thousands of shrimp farmers face uncertainty as some 6,000 shrimp farms and hatcheries in Bangladesh's cyclone-hit southern districts were washed away. The countrys shrimp exports, a major foreign exchange earner, have suffered an estimated loss of US$ 36 million.

The Indian fishing communities are upset with the Ministry of Environment and Forests on being left out of the consultation process over an Integrated Coastal Zone Management scheme under World Bank guidelines. They say the government is trying to bring in Special Economic Zones, tourist resorts and ports all along India's coastline.

more...Observations from space show that as the climate warms, phytoplankton growth rates go down as does the amount of carbon dioxide these ocean plants consume. That allows carbon dioxide to accumulate more rapidly in the atmosphere, which would produce more warming. The implications for the entire oceanic ecosystem (much of which ends up as food for humans) are dire. Although the Orissa government claims it has succeeded in cutting the number of turtle deaths by pushing aggressively for the use of nets that allow trapped turtles to escape, and enforcing no-fishing regulations, illegal fishing by trawlers in protected areas of the sea continues unchecked.
