Hundreds of tons of genetically engineered corn untested for environmental or food safety was inadvertently sold by U.S.-based Syngenta over the past four years, the company admitted Thursday in the journal Nature, despite discovering the mistake several months ago. This "demonstrates once again that GE crops can't be controlled, even by the companies that develop them," said one anti-GE campaigner.

President Robert Mugabe has secretly approached UN officials for help formulating a major appeal for food assistance to be launched as soon as the results of the March 31 election are declared. The president has, in the past, rebuffed international offers of assistance despite warnings that nearly half the population urgently require food aid or they could starve.

Consumers International has launched a new global call for action to control genetically modified (GM) food through labelling, safety testing, and protection of non-GM foods against contamination. In the UK, you can follow up a number of suggestions for writing to policymakers and raising awareness amongst the general public.

Political leaders and antihunger institutions continue to offer piecemeal and oftentimes self-serving proposals for ending hunger. Such proposals won't end hunger--in fact, ending hunger isn't really what they are about. Instead, our growing reliance on food banks may distract us from finding lasting solutions to the hunger crisis.
