26.10.2007 After decades of promoting urea, the Indian government has decided to remodel its fertilizer subsidy based on its study of soil ecology. The excessive use of urea based fertilizers has led to a decline in soil fertility in parts of the country.

Making roads possible
25.10.2007 A Food for Work initiative by the World Food Programme (WFP) has helped rebuild more than 1,300 kms of rural roads and almost 9,000 kms of bridle paths in quake-affected North Pakistan. Rural roads and pathways connecting the mountainous terrain were destroyed by the 2005 earthquake, cutting people off from relief supplies and medical aid.

23.10.2007 ‘Agriculture for development’ is the new mantra of the World Bank. The latest WB Development Report calls for greater investment in agriculture in developing countries, claiming its GDP growth is four times more effective in reducing poverty than GDP growth originating outside the sector.

10.10.2007 Over 3,000 labourers signed on a monster banner to remind the Pakistan government of its promises to eradicate poverty and other MDG goals. The 10 km banner, patched together from smaller bits of cloth, will carry 1.5 million signatures to be unfurled in Bahawalpur on October 17.
