For rural populace who could not buy mobile phones due to power shortage, a new system has been launched in Uganda that enables people to charge phones by using a bicycle. The system can charge eight phones per hour by riding a bicycle.

Science fiction writer and visionary Sir Arthur C. Clarke died on March 19, 2008 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, at the age of 90. The global telecommunication community will remember him for his farsighted prediction of artificial satellite stations for earth-based communications.

The newly-opened Global Seed Vault (GSV) at Svalbard in Norway is being criticised by Indian and other NGOs for excluding farmers from its institutional framework. Farmers being the first link in the food chain, should be involved in conserving genetic biodiversity, they argue.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is calling on the Tajik President to veto amendments passed by Parliament on 19 July that would include Internet publications in the country's defamation laws. The amendments would criminalise defamatory statements published on websites, on top of those made in print and broadcast media.

Georgian ensimmäinen yhteisöradio aloitti lähetykset, kun Ninotsmindan kaupungin keskustan kovaäänisistä alkoi kuulumaan paikallisten toimittajien lähetykset. EU:n rahoittaman projektin toimittajat ovat saaneet asiantuntijakoulutuksen ennen lähetysten aloittamista kaupungissa, joka joutuu usein sääolojen vuoksi eristyksiin muusta maailmasta. Yhteisöradioita on hyödynnetty kehitysyhteistyössä menestyksekkäästi jo vuosien ajan.
