TOKYO, Apr 29 (IPS) - It can be seen as an International Labour Day bonus for those trying to seek their fortunes in Japan. Beginning May 1, Tokyo will be less fussy with unskilled foreign workers and start opening its labour market doors to them to ward off a looming demographic crisis.

Réunis en assemblée générale le 15 avril, les membres du Syndicat des étudiantes et étudiants employés de l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), affilié à la FTQ, ont accepté avec enthousiasme leur première convention collective, conclue après quatre mois de négociations intensives. Ce syndicat de 2 000 membres regroupe les assistants d'enseignement et de recherche. Premier du genre au Québec, il est rattaché à l'Alliance de la fonction publique du Canada (AFPC).

WASHINGTON, D.C., Apr 12 (OneWorld) - The chief executives of major U.S. corporations enjoyed double-digit pay raises last year, adding to a record of ''jaw-dropping'' compensation largely undisturbed by recent years' falling profits and share prices and a wave of scandals involving management chicanery, the country's leading labor federation said in a new survey.

Tesco will announce its annual profits today, results which will doubtless satisfy the shareholders. ActionAid reports that these margins are coming not from those of us at the top of the chain in the supermarkets but from casual women labourers on South African farms whose conditions are being squeezed below poverty thresholds.
