The news that Coca-Cola was in negotiations to sponsor the anti-poverty Live 8 concert series brought swift condemnation from across the globe. Among other gross misdeeds, the company stands accused of pumping massive amounts of groundwater from India's parched earth and allowing the intimidation and killing of union leaders in Colombia.

The Second Children's World Congress on Child Labour and Education will be held in New Delhi from September 4-8, 2005 by Global March Against Child Labour and hosted by Bachpan Bachao Andolan. The Congress aims to empower children to lead worldwide efforts to end child labour and to ensure free, quality education for all children.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has given a call to eradicate child labour from mines and quarries in the next five to ten years. It has identified mining and quarrying as one of the most dangerous sectors for children to work in.

The World Day Against Child Labour, which falls on 12 June, will focus on removing child labour from one of the worst forms of child labour - children working in mines and quarries. It is estimated that nearly one million children work in mines and quarries the world over.

In a raid similar to the one carried out in Mumbai last week, in which hundreds of children working in factories were rescued, another 29 children working in inhuman conditions in factories in New Delhi were released on June 6. New Delhi NGO, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) carried out a raid in an industrial area in Delhi and saved the children.

Marking its 30th anniversary this week, the UN Working Group on Contemporary Forms of Slavery--the only international governing body devoted to monitoring modern-day slavery--is hosting a week-long conference in Geneva. Outlining the hotspots for slavery worldwide, including forced labor in Brazil, abductions in Sudan, and trafficking of women in North Korea, Anti-Slavery International is calling for stronger UN action.
