Remittances – money sent home by immigrant workers abroad – are hugely beneficial to many countries across the world.India is the world’s top receiver of remittances. Flows into the country have grown dramatically in recent years, touching US$ 17.4 billion in 2003, up from some US$2 billion a year in the late 1980s.

India has been remarkably successful in boosting economic growth: its economy has grown at about 6 percent per annum since the 1990s, with growth accelerating to 9 percent over the past two years. Absolute poverty has been cut in half, and the country seems set to achieve middle income status soon.

Nandigram in West Bengal has emerged as the lightning rod for criticism of the governmentÂ’s economic policies. While previous clashes here over the proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) have killed at least seven people including a policeman, the events of March 14 put a halt to the West Bengal governmentÂ’s industrialisation bid and has forced a re-think at the national level.

SAN FRANCISCO, Mar 17 (OneWorld) - Politicians in Washington are debating the issue of immigration this week. Many Democrats want to create a guest worker program through which undocumented immigrants would be able to earn legalization over time. Conservative Republicans have their own ideas--from stepping up deportations, to building a fence along the U.S.-Mexican border, to punishing employers who hire undocumented workers.

Last week, the Mjaft! Foundation (the philanthropic branch of Mjaft! Movement) presented the opening of its ambitious "Une Punoj" ("I Work”) project. This initiative will, through an innovative website, create a virtual space where employers and jobseekers can interact in order to jointly improve the unemployment situation in Albania. The site will list all the available labour market opportunities.

On the occasion of March 8, the International Women’s Day, the Croatian Women Network, in cooperation witht he Women Section of the Association of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia and the Women Committee of the Croatian Independent Trade Unions, organized a protest march, starting at former factory “Nada Dimic” and ending the walk at “Kamenita vrata” (Stone Portal), as a warning to deteriorating position of women in the labour market.
