“Felix” and “Roma Star” NGOs held a round-table discussion in Bitola, last week, to discuss the topic “Implementation of Strategy for the Roma Facilitates EU Integration”. In the discussion, they came to the conclusion that two memoranda of cooperation need to be signed as soon as possible, one with the local self-government and the other with Employment Agency.

The state of California in the United States has for a while been the standard bearer of policy measures that reduce state responsibility in critical areas that were typically the responsibility of public provision earlier. The privatisation of electricity utilities was one infamous example, in which California led the world and ended up providing a textbook case of how not to privatise power distribution.

Many Bhutanese women and children are dying still dying unnecessarily, according to a report by the National Commission for Women and Children (NCWC). For infants, while pneumonia is the major killer, thousands are still dying from diarrhea. A high proportion of these deaths are in the first weeks of life. South Asia still has nearly 400 million poor people in a population of 1.42 billion. Although, on the criteria of purchasing power parity (PPP) of US$ 1 a day, the scale of poverty has come down from 51.3 per cent to 31.3 per cent in 2001, the challenges to overcome poverty are so enormous that the efforts being made to alleviate poverty are far from being equal to the task. Poverty is not just endemic, but it is increasingly concentrated in the lagging regions.

A curious nine-year-old Mukesh Vanzara ventured out of his home in Asarwa on September 6 last year to watch a religious procession. Still in his school uniform, that was the last his mother saw of him. Since then, it has been countless rounds to the Shahibaug police station for the poor and completely broken Vanzaras.
