The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have reached a halfway point but little seems to have changed, particularly for women whose lives are most affected by extreme poverty. The MDGs do not deal with the underlying causes for women and girl's poverty which needs to be understood in ways men and women access and control services and resources.

ActionAidÂ’s Hunger Monitoring project reveals that climate change and oppression in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have worsened hunger and deprivation amongst the population. The study points out significant changes in weather patterns over the last four to five years which has adversely affected farming.

Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP) has launched the Global Young Social EntrepreneursÂ’ Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Global Competition will select 100 winners who will attend the upcoming Young Social Entrepreneurs Forum. The winners will be announced on 1 October 2007, after a review by an independent jury.

Economic growth eludes the poor in South Asia, according to the recently-released UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Report 2007. The report says that over 30 per cent of the population still lives on a dollar a day in the region.

APDIP (Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme) has released its second e-Note on information and communications technology (ICT) skill development in the Asia-Pacific region. The first in the series examined the gaps between demand and supply of ICT skills, this e-Note focuses on what could be done to bridge the identified gaps at national and regional levels.

Poverty is decreasing in Bangladesh but disparities between rich-poor disparity is on the rise. So claims the Civil Society Progress Report on MDGs 2007 released by PeopleÂ’s Forum on MDGs (PFM), to mark the mid-point to the MDG deadline in 2015.

Anti-poverty campaigners around the world are organising a broad range of events around July 7th to mark the midway point for the UN Millennium Development Goals and to hold their governments to account. Part of the growing Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), the July 07, 2007 events will focus on how governmentsÂ’ efforts to meet these goals are insufficient and to highlight the growing threat of climate change on the poor and marginalised.

NEW DELHI, Jul 6 (OneWorld) - Despite rapid economic growth, economic disparity is increasing in South Asia, according to the annual Millennium Development Goals (MDG) report by the UN, which also says that a massive 30 percent of the population still lives on a dollar a day in the Indian subcontinent.
