The Dockyards at Durres, previously named “Gdansk” and lately “Kurum” is moving towards bankruptcy, slowly but surely. Since 1998, the only activities going on in the dockyards were the “reforms” that mainly included the sacking of over 600 workers. At the moment, 215 workers work at “Kurum” Dockyard, with majority of them waiting to be laid-off while receiving only 50% of their wages.

Over the past period of several years, the city of Durres has suffered from a great crisis in the employment sector, which has deteriorated further in the last three months. According to the official statistics, there are 21,650 unemployed in Durres, and only in the period June-August of this year, additional 1,700 men and women have lost their jobs due to the closing of several companies.
