Bangladesh has finalised a list of 1,017 products to try to get duty-free market access to the WTO member countries.It was agreed at the last WTO ministerial meeting in Hong Kong that 97 per cent of products from the least-developed countries (LDCs) would be allowed duty-free access to the markets of WTO member nations.

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) report on trends in trade in 2005 and prospects in 2006 highlights the weak spots in terms of economic growth. According to WTO economists, growth in global trade has, in the past decade, been consistently double the growth in the global economy.

China plans to open up a trade market on the Tibet-India border twice a week from June which will mark the first direct trade link in India's north eastern region since the Sino-Indian border war of 1962.

World trade organisation director general Pascal Lamy felt the full weight of Indian civil society on a recent visit as he sought to get a sense of the stakeholders' views on the Doha development round of negotiations. From angry farmers to lucid economic experts, he heard the strong views of those who may ultimately be affected by the outcome of the current round of trade talks.

The launch of the Doha Round in November 2001 was a milestone in itself, as a large number of developing countries were initially not in favour of a new round. They felt that the Uruguay Round had been unfair to them, and wanted their grievances to be addressed before a new round was launched.

The director general knows the ground realities for certain. Despite this, he is making a frantic bid to make the parties come to an agreed conclusion. He will be on a tour to India, this week on April 5-6. This, time he wants to hold discussions with all stakeholders in India.
