"For our insurance business, climate change is increasing the potential of property damage at a rate of 2 to 4 percent per year," said the CEO of a UK-based subsidiary of Allianz Group Wednesday, as his company announced a new partnership with WWF to combat climate change, calling on G8 leaders to set out a clear plan of action to address the issue.

The world's eight richest nations, or the G8, represent 13 percent of the world's people but are responsible for 45% of the world's carbon emissions. Leaders at the G8 Summit in Scotland need to wake up to the fact that time is running out to tackle climate injustice, says Friends of the Earth International, calling on individuals and groups throughout the world to ring bells on July 7 at exactly 13:45 (Scottish local time).

Overcrowded classrooms gave birth to the School of Environmental Studies--an alternative high school in a suburban U.S. town. Situated on a 12-acre site at the Minnesota Zoo, students use the zoo and surrounding 3000-acre regional park as classroom and living laboratory, learning from a curriculum geared to making them stewards of the environment.

The Danube Day, July 29, is international manifestation with many different events are organized in all 13 countries along the Danube River, designed to attract the attention to the need for protection of the Danube and its waters. Events will be organized under the Danube Day observance, with the aim to encourage the states, communities and organizations to cooperate in taking action to protect the rivers in the area.

The World Bank said Thursday that it was giving Albania a US$17.5 million (euro14.45 million) loan to clean up its coastal area. The loan, to be used over seven years, is to protect Albania's coastal natural resources and cultural assets and promote sustainable development of the Albanian coast.

The Indian government has taken steps to ban the blending of MMT, a manganese-based deadly octane enhancer, in petrol as it damages the brain and also harms emission control components in vehicles. New Delhi-based NGO, Centre for Science and Environment, has alleged that though it was banned in Canada and the US, the MMT business had just about begun to shift its base to Asia and Africa.

The Centre for Environment Education (CEE), an autonomous NGO of the Indian government is reaching out to schools all over the country with environmental education. One of its programmes - National Environment Education Programmes for Schools (NEEPS) - is run in collaboration with a number of partners all over India.

Two weeks ago, world scientists called for greenhouse gas reduction, warning delays would be costly. But a leaked draft shows President Bush will discourage the G-8 from taking a stand on climate change: the White House deleted statements that global warming has already begun, was caused by human activity, and is a threat to human health and ecosystems.

If you have seen the condition of parts of the coastline along the west of Scotland, you will understand why the Scottish parliament is proposing a tax on the use of plastic bags. A similar tax in Ireland has been successful.
