The Centre plans to declare 2007 as Water Year — Year of More Crop and Income Per Drop of Water.The Union Ministry of Water Resources has accepted a suggestion to this effect and will soon approach the Union Cabinet for approval.

A new study by the Washington DC-based think tank Resources for the Future (RFF) has found that the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) as a fuel for vehicles in Indian capital New Delhi has made the most significant impact on air quality in the city. The study warns that the gains from CNG will be lost if vehicles do not reduce the number of kilometers travelled.

GUALEGUAYCHU, Argentina, Dec 18 (IPS) - With a nativity scene and a big Christmas tree set up on the highway to the nearby bridge leading to Uruguay, residents of the Argentine town of Gualeguaychu plan to continue blocking traffic between the two countries until a pulp plant being built on the other side of the river moves elsewhere.

A World Bank report - Global Economic Prospects 2007: Managing the Next Wave of Globalization - released on Friday in Indian capital New Delhi warns that globalization could spur faster growth in developing countries but could be accompanied by growing income inequality and potentially severe environmental pressures.

The availability of safe drinking water is a major concern for communities, particularly in the rural areas. According to World Bank studies, currently only about one out of every 10 Sri Lankan households has water on tap and every fifth person relies on rivers, streams and other unprotected water sources for their drinking water.
