In partnership with Zelena Istra (Green Istria>, the GONG held a debate in Labin, May 25, to discuss the location of the LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) terminal and the possibility to construct a third thermoelectric power plant in Plomin that would use coal as fuel. The large audience that gathered to follow the debate confirmed the great interest and concern of the local population about the future welfare of their region.

A study from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE) reveals that Indian dams are the most polluting. Though dams produce renewable energy they also contribute to global warming by emitting huge amounts of methane into the atmosphere

Indian NGO, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organising a two-day media briefing workshop for journalists and media professionals on river pollution and cleaning strategies at India Habitat Center, New Delhi, India on June 14-15, 2007. The workshop will focus on Yamuna, a severely polluted river that cuts across the city.

National news channel NDTV and Sanctuary Asia, an environmental magazine have launched an online campaign to protect India’s famous big five – the rhino, bengal tiger, leopard, asiatic lion and the elephant. These animals are high on the demand lists of poachers and are slowly vanishing due to poor protection in the reserved forests and a lack of recruitment.

The Macedonian Green Centre, an organization working on advocacy, lobbying and research on environmental issues, started the implementation of its project for “Creation of Green Lobby Group in Macedonian Parliament”. The project is financed by the UK Embassy in Macedonia.

India will mandate a final product standard for soft drinks, claim a government expert committee report. This comes in the wake of a four-year fight by Indian NGO Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) on pesticide residues in soft drinks.

The Indian government now plans to give degraded forest land to industry to ‘farm’ trees for raw material. This proposal follows hectic lobbying by the paper pulp industry and the controversial Special Economic Zone policy pursued so far.

Last week, Mjaft! Movement’s activists, donning surgical masks, declared the Ministry of Environment closed. During the Ministry’s working hours the activists placed themselves outside the Ministry walls, on “Durresi Street”, holding banners that loudly proclaimed the following message in capital letters: “CLOSED DOWN”.

India's Supreme Court dismissed an application on 4 May that sought enhanced compensation for Bhopal's victims of the gas tragedy. More than two decades later, survivors are still struggling to claim their rights after toxic gases spewed out of the city's Union Carbide plant in 1984.
