Greenpeace criticized the decision of the India power ministry to not introduce a legislation to ban the light bulb in India by 2010. Reacting to the ministry's statement that a legislation to ban the light bulb in India is premature, Greenpeace pointed out the government of Ghana for taking key measures to implement a complete ban on the light bulb in the country.

According to the UN ChildrenÂ’s Agency (UNICEF), the rains and cyclone in Pakistan have displaced more than 377,000 people. Tens of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) are now living in makeshift shelters, or in tents provided by the aid agencies.

Local water activistsÂ’ group Forum for Water and Sanitation (NFWS), Nepal, said the lack of laws enabling equal rights to water has long been a key problem and blamed the poor water management, political neglect and the current legal framework for water scarcity.

Tigers have become few and far between in IndiaÂ’s specially designated national parks and sanctuaries. A flourishing illegal trade in tiger parts mainly in China and East Asia has led to indiscriminate poaching in IndiaÂ’s protected tiger reserves.

Greenpeace activists demand a law to govern e-waste management in the country and presented a reportin the Ministry of Information Technology, India, on ‘Extended Producer Responsibility in a non-OECD context’ which can be used as a basis for legislation to tackle the growing problem of e-waste .

Bhutan, a country committed to environmental preservation is in dilemma as how to reconcile conservation, economic development in the era of rapid globalization. As per the law which says the country reserve 70 per cent of its land for 'green' cover, of which 60 per cent should be forests.

Nepal has developed simple and cheap technologies that make the best of local resources and don't damage the environment. The new technologies have been indigenously designed, based on traditional skills and knowledge, and are cheap and easy to use and maintain.

Greenpeace India has released the Indian Guide to Greener electronics which ranks major Indian computer manufacturers on their green performance. The ranking shows that most Indian companies are yet to be at par with global brands.

India plans to expand its oceanography research, tapping into the wealth of the little-explored Indian and Southern Oceans. Exploring these oceans could yield bounties in terms of information and resources. Both oceans play an important role in the formation of the Indian monsoon and could also harbour submerged deposits of copper, nickel, manganese and cobalt.

The administration of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), in Varanasi district of north Indian state, Uttar Pradesh, has decided to ban soft drinks from 1 August 2007 in the campus. The ban gives a boost to a movement against the Coca-Cola bottling plant in village Mehdiganj in Varanasi district.

A new study says that the global warming trend caused by a buildup of greenhouse gases is a major contributor to the melting of Himalayan and other tropical glaciers. A new analysis of pollution-filled 'brown clouds' over South Asia by researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego offers hope that the region may be able to arrest some of the alarming retreat of such glaciers by reducing its air pollution.

Delhi based NGO, Chintan which works at the grassroots with the urban poor, waste picking children and adults has inaugurated its first plastic recycling centre in Delhi. The objective is to set up a replicable well designed recycling depot and build the capacity of the informal sector.
