Asda, the UKÂ’s second biggest supermarket, has announced its participation in the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. The meetings will attempt to promote a sustainable solution for palm oil, the sourcing of which currently contributes to deforestation in some of the worldÂ’s most sensitive regions.

Showing serious concern over the dismal condition of the tribal population in India, the standing committee on Social Justice and Empowerment have brought to the notice of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs that the forest-dwelling scheduled tribes, who have been residing there for generations and are dependent on the MFP (minor forest produce) for their livelihood are still not enjoying ownership rights.

During climate change talks this week, the idea of "avoided deforestation" is back in vogue. Under the policy, developed countries would get carbon emmissions credits for helping developing countries conserve forests. Despite some doubts, both rich and poor see this as a potential way to curb harmful greenhouse gas emmisions and save forests around the world.
