Rising pollution levels have caused an increase in the number of patients suffering from various lung illnesses and conditions. This was confirmed by Silvana Bala, MD, specialist in pulmonary diseases, who says that this is particularly noticeable with patients who come from the most polluted areas of Albania. Bala adds that it is children which are most affected and endangered from the rising pollution. An ever larger number of children contract asthma, which is caused, in the majority of cases, by the environmental pollution.

Decontamination of Cape Arza, which was polluted by uranium material, is competed and the location is completely secure, from the aspect of danger to the environment and the health of people, said Boro Vucinic, Minister of Environmental Protection and Spatial Planning of Montenegro at the press conference yesterday. Ana Misurovic, Direktor of the Centre for Eco-Toxicology Research, said that the process of decontamination, which was implemented in three phases, cost 450,000 Eur.

WWF has revealed evidence that people across the UK are contaminated with a cocktail of highly toxic chemicals. Tests revealed that Northern Ireland displayed the highest average concentration of a pesticide type that in high quantities may cause cancer and damage the immune, nervous and reproductive systems.

"This Administration's track record is toxic to our children," says a new report by the Children's Environmental Health Network that concludes that environmental deregulation by the Bush administration is endangering the health and welfare of children around the country and giving it an "F" for polcies such as keeping mercury out of the food chain.

WWF has released a damning report exposing the UK government's abysmal record on tackling toxic chemicals in everyday products. It criticises the UK's lack of effective action to address the threat from hazardous chemicals in its current chemicals policy.

Indian NGO, Centre for Science and Environment, has exposed the undue haste in which an Indian government panel has used manipulated data to prove that pesticide endosulfan is not linked to disabilities in the south Indian state of Kerala.

The UNEP has warned that sand storms in northeast Asia are causing widespread damage to livestock and crops, disrupting communications and causing respiratory problems far from their source of origin.
