An investigation by human rights organisation People's Union for Democratic Rights, in the east Indian state of Orissa, finds that a terror campaign has been unleashed by the government in villages where mining is taking place. The investigation found that people's consent has been taken in a fraudulent manner.

The citizens of Zharreze commune reacted against the Governments decision of three days ago to turn the area into a hazardous waste storage site. The citizens of the community see this decision as a death sentence hanging over them, brought about by the very representatives they elected to solve their problems.

On the occasion of April 22, Earth Day 2005, the local authorities, NGOs and elementary schools will organize environmental actions in Podgorica, Kotor and Ulcinj. Through planting of trees, cleaning of public parks, children festivals and information campaign, the Montenegro NGOs will send another appeal for preservation of the planets environment.

As Coca Cola shareholders convened in Delaware April 19 for their annual meeting, protesters spoke against the company's operations in India that have taken vital water and dumped toxic waste in areas around some bottling plants. They are demanding that Coca-Cola cease operations immediately and provide compensation to the affected communities.

Lindane is an old, dangerous pesticide that stays in people's bodies and builds up in the environment. Nonetheless Bayer continues to sell lindane in the U.S. and now the pesticide is a huge problem in the Arctic, where food supplies of many indigenous peoples are highly contaminated, says the Pesticide Action Network of North America, asking you to call Bayer on April 21 to ban lindane in the U.S.

American students launch a nation-wide protest against injustice meted out to people in Bhopal by American multinationals in one of the worst industrial disasters in which more than 22,000 persons were killed. The protests are to force the Indian government to take action against the erring corporations.

A study conducted by a New Delhi-based NGO, Toxics Link, and IPEN has revealed that egg samples from India contain one of the highest levels of dioxins in the world. Toxics Link has indicated that incineration of waste could be one of the likely sources of dioxins.

No-one could object to the aim of the government's new Landfill Allocation Scheme - to reduce the amount of waste dumped in landfill sites. But surely this should be achieved through extra recycling rather than incineration?
