Egypt has established a 30 million US dollar centre for renewable energy for the Middle East and North Africa. "If we cover only one per cent of the Arabian Desert with concentrated solar power technology, we can produce enough electricity to power the whole planet," says one environmentalist.

The Nepal government will spend US$ 1.1 million to set up a national science laboratory to carry out advanced research on biotechnology, biofuels and renewable energy. The laboratory, due to open in the beginning of 2010, will be managed by the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).

Centre for Science and Environment, an India-based organisation, rubbishes the clean development mechanism, saying that developed nations are more interested in capturing markets in developing economies than addressing the issue of clean development. The report, Up in Smoke, compiled by environmental groups, including Oxfam and Greenpeace, says rich countries must honour their commitments to renewable energy. India alone has the potential to provide 60% of its electricity using these sources by 2050. It also calls for rich countries to allow the transfer of green technologies to developing countries.
