Kiinnostus biopolttoaineiden valmistukseen kasvaa ympäri maailmaa sitä enemmän mitä korkeammalle öljyn ja sen jalosteiden, kuten bensiinin ja dieselin, hinta nousee. Brasiliassa biopolttoaineita on valmistettu ja käytetty jo pitkään. Vuonna 2004 Brasilian osuus maailman etanolin tuotannosta oli 37 prosenttia. Yhdysvallat oli kakkosena 33 prosentin osuudellaan.
