Brasiliassa biopolttoaineita on valmistettu ja käytetty jo pitkään. Vuonna 2004 Brasilian osuus maailman etanolin tuotannosta oli 37 prosenttia. Yhdysvallat oli kakkosena 33 prosentin osuudellaan.
