Le 27 juin, MSF a ouvert à Aguié son cinquième centre de nutrition thérapeutique au Niger, d'une capacité de 150 lits d'hospitalisation. Mais quinze jours après l'ouverture, le centre affiche déjà complet. Pour faire face à l'afflux d'enfants souffrant de malnutrition grave, il faut doubler le nombre de lits.

Henri Massé, Réjean Parent et Claude Faucher, font notamment référence à l’introduction de partenariats public-privé (PPP), à la privatisation des activités dites périphériques et à la constitution d’une caisse-santé dont la nécessité n’a jamais été démontrée de façon rigoureuse.

Efforts to remove toxic arsenic from drinking water in the Indian state of West Bengal are failing, according to a study published this month. Researchers from Jadhavpur University say that efforts by the Indian government to decontaminate groundwater have failed.

Together, they account for over 40 per cent of the disease burden in high mortality developing countries, and over 75 per cent in lower mortality developing countries. Fifteen years ago, after discovering carcinogenic solvents in their drinking water, Wisconsin citizens began demanding that nearby Badger Army Ammunition Plant--which was polluting the regionÂ’s water, land, and air--be closed. Today, the clean up continues and the volunteers remain a steady voice for human health.

A recent CDC study shows that over 90% of people in the U.S. carry multiple pesticides in their bodies, many of which have been linked to serious health effects. While many of the pesticides are now banned in the U.S., the insecticide lindane--prohibited in over 50 countries--continues to be used for U.S. agricultural products.

Congress passed an amendment yesterday that will eliminate contraceptives from efforts to prevent obstetric fistula--a disability resulting from obstructed labor, and often leading to the deaths of the mother and baby. The WHO reports that reducing unintended pregnancies is the most effective means to reduce the number of fistula cases worldwide.

A new UNAIDS report - ON THE FRONT LINE A review of policies and programmes to address AIDS among peacekeepers and uniformed services - encourages stronger international cooperation to develop long-term strategies for HIV prevention, testing and counseling, and HIV treatment for personnel deployed in international peacekeeping operations as well as national uniformed services.

In a letter, nineteen members of Congress are asking President Bush to clarify his position on contraception. The question stems from a press conference in late May when White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan, asked about the PresidentÂ’s position on birth control, refused to answer.
