30.11.2007 2007 AIDS Epidemic Update a joint report by UNAIDS and WHO comes as a reprieve. The new report reveals that the epidemic has slowed down in recent times and that the dreaded HIV virus has actually not infected as many people as it was earlier feared.

Developing medicines only for the rich is a bad business strategy, as also the scant interest shown by pharmaceutical companies in research and development of medicines for diseases that affect the poor in developing countries, says the report.

Child receives polio vaccine
28.11.2007 Bill and Milinda Gates Foundation has extended a grant of 100 million dollars for polio eradication worldwide. The grant will target Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan, the last four countries in the world where fresh cases of polio still keep surfacing.

Rapporto su violente in Ituri - da Msf
26.11.2007 "Nonostante una diminuzione generale dell’intensità e della frequenza dei conflitti nel distretto dell’Ituri nell’est della Repubblica Democratica del Congo (RdC), la popolazione civile continua a subire livelli di violenza intollerabili": lo afferma Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) in un rapporto che testimonia il perdurare delle "atroci violenze sessuali e le conseguenze umanitarie delle operazioni militari condotte nel 2007 nell’ambito del 'processo di pacificazione' nella regione". "Quasi la metà delle violenze sono causate da uomini legati alle forze armate o alle milizie”. In un altro comunicato sempre MSF segnala che nel corso degli ultimi mesi nuove ondate di combattimenti nella provincia del Nord Kivu, nella parte orientale della RdC hanno costretto alla fuga diverse centinaia di migliaia di persone.
