Four African governments have said they will not use generic AIDS drugs made in South Africa that have been cleared by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration unless they are also approved by the World Health Organization. U.S. officials say the WHO would not ensure the same quality as the FDA, but the African governments have long relied on WHO testing, and see no reason to switch now.

Bosnia and Herzegovina again applied to the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. This year, B&H seeks 14,199,487 US dollars for the planned activities in the 2006-2010 period.

While there has been a sea change in the attention and resources devoted to combating AIDS in Africa, the way the money is used in the coming years will be critical to the survival of the continent, say analysts Laurie Garrett and Scott Rosenstein. The ICDDR,B has provided a lowdown on the current scenario related to HIV surveillance in Bangladesh and found that behaviours that can transmit HIV are very common. The surveys have focussed on selected groups of individuals who are known to be at high risk for acquiring the HIV infection.
