WASHINGTON, DC, May 31 (OneWorld) - A dramatic shift of funds and priorities is needed to stem the tide of the global AIDS pandemic, said women's health advocates in Washington, DC last week, marking the 25th anniversary of the disease's discovery.

According to new data in the UNAIDS 2006 Report on the global AIDS epidemic, the AIDS epidemic appears to be slowing down globally, but new infections are continuing to increase in certain regions and countries. The report also shows that important progress has been made in country AIDS responses, including increases in funding and access to treatment, and decreases in HIV prevalence among young people in some countries over the past five years.

A new report by UNAIDS says though progress has been made in tackling AIDS, the epidemic continues to outpace response. New data in the UNAIDS 2006 Report on the global AIDS epidemic says that the epidemic appears to be slowing down globally, but new infections are continuing to increase in certain regions and countries. Scores of people participated in a silent protest in the south Indian state of Chennai as part of Global AIDS Week of Action (May 20-26). The demanded the distribution of nutritious food through the PDS, provision of anti-retroviral(ARV) therapy in primary health centres and CD4 count testing centres in all districts.

Last week, "Vecernji list" daily published an article on the recently arrested suspects of several armed robberies and brutal murders, which gives an interesting view of the motives of their brutality. The suspects are, namely, all HIV positive, a fact which, according to the daily, makes them insensitive to humanity and the value of human life, because of their iminent death. Such a comment provoked strong reaction from the Croatian Association for HIV (CAHIV).
