In response to the murder of a High Court judge, the president's office of Sri Lanka has announced that "the death penalty will be effective... for rape, murder and narcotics dealings". For the last 30 years the president has commuted all death sentences and this announcement is a blow to human rights in Sri Lanka.

Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen who was forced out of Bangladesh after her novel said that Quran - the holy book of the Muslims - was unfair to women has applied to live in the Indian city of Kolkata. She is currently residing in Sweden.

Ten years ago, the U.S. committed to promote women's human rights, political participation, and access to education, employment, and health care around the world. In a series of meetings last year, however, the U.S. pulled its support for the platform. A coalition of women's groups is asking Americans to call on the president to reaffirm the country's support for women's rights at a major UN meeting in March.

Heritiers de la Justice, a human rights organisation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has expressed concern over the murder of a 22 year old student of the Bakavu region by unidentified, armed men clad in military attire. The murder is suspected to have been committed by the FARDC soldiers who are supposed to protect and secure the national borders.

Amnesty International is concerned for the safety of human rights leaders in Nepal, along with hundreds of student activists and members of political parties who have reportedly been arrested since the King seized absolute power on February 1. Pressure from citizens around the world is needed to ensure their safety and the country's return to democracy, the group says.

Some 17 human rights defenders in Nepal have been arrested and the threat of "disappearances" is growing following the King's seizure of power two weeks ago, warn international observers. A rally has been organized for this weekend in New Delhi by one of the activists who managed to escape the country.

The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in B&H held the electoral annual convention yesterday in Sarajevo. The Convention voted to elect Srdjan Dizdarevic to the Office of the President of the B&H Helsinki Committee for another five year term.
