Dans le cadre de la XXXVe Assemblée générale de l’Organisation des États américains (OEA), qui a commencé aujourd’hui à Ft. Lauderdale, aux États-Unis, la Coalition internationale des organisations pour les droits humains dans les Amériques a adressé aux pays membres de l’OEA une série de recommandations sur des questions prioritaires touchant les droits humains. Dans la déclaration qu’elle a émise, la Coalition a signalé que la faiblesse des institutions démocratiques ainsi que l’exclusion et les inégalités sociales contribuent grandement à la fragilité de la démocratie dans les Amériques.

On grounds that he promoted hatred, genocide, and crimes against humanity, a Canadian court voted unanimously to expel Leon Mugesera, forcing him to stand trial in Rwanda. Jean de Dieu Mucyo, Rwanda's chief prosecutor, said the decision was a major step in efforts to deport others implicated in the genocide that killed nearly a million people.

UzbekistanÂ’s Andijan massacre has yet to be independently investigated, largely because of Washington infighting; Rumsfeld's Defense Department is blocking an inquiry called for by Rice's State Department, explains veteran jounalist Ahmed Rashid. By doing so, the U.S. is giving Uzbek president Islam Karimov exactly what he wants: dwindling media coverage and a chance to slip off the international agenda.

"Honoring diversity is honoring life. Montevideo for the respect of all genders, sexual identities and orientations," reads a triangular granite monument in the heart of Uruguay's capital city. The monument, which acknowledges the right of sexual diversity, is the first of its kind in Latin America.

In 2002, Pakistani woman Mukhtaran Bibi--also known as Mukhtaran Mai--was gang raped on her village elders' orders. The men convicted in her case have since been released. As the country's Supreme Court finally takes up her case, Amnesty asks you to take action and encourage Pakistan to protect women's rights.

The Osijek-based Coalition for Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (LSC) currently implements three programmes: a campaign for definition of the status of NGOs that provide free legal assistance; promotion of minority rights; and promotion of European anti-racism and anti-xenophobia values. These are long-term programmes and campaigns that proceed over several years and involve organizations from all over Croatia.

As the world marked the International Day in Support for Victims of Torture on Sunday, the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) released a new report showing Asian countries that sanction torture are facing growing criticism at home and abroad. As greater access to information fuels protests across the continent, AHRC demands torture be a recognized--and enforced--crime in every country.

Selon de nouvelles recherches dont les résultats sont publiés ce mercredi 22 juin 2005, en exportant des armes de manière irresponsable dans certains des pays les plus pauvres et les plus touchés par la guerre, les États du G8 ne tiennent pas leurs engagements de réduire la pauvreté, de ramener la stabilité et de faire respecter les droits humains. Des armes ont ainsi été exportées dans des pays comme la Colombie, le Myanmar (ex-Birmanie), les Philippines, la République du Congo et le Soudan.

Ninety-seven Zimbabwean asylum seekers are refusing food and water in protest over the UK governmentÂ’s plans to send them home despite the potential dangers. The Church of England has also demanded a stop to ongoing deportations.

For the first time, Hindu religious leaders from the south Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are planning to launch a drive against untouchability and the oppressive caste system. The leaders are motivated because untouchability is leading to conversions and maintenance of temples has gone down.

As an unprecedented coalition of civil society organisations appeals to the UN to investigate recent events in Zimbabwe, the outspoken Archbishop of Bulawayo has won an international humanitarian award. As well as criticising Robert Mugabe, Archbishop Pius Ncube has called on the British government to be more tolerant of asylum-seekers from Zimbabwe.
