International agency Oxfam has said that rich countries must change their attitude to world trade negotiations and show leadership to deliver reforms that lift people out of poverty. It wants the EU and US to stop making excuses for not reforming agricultural trade rules and to end their unreasonable demands for developing countries to open industry and services markets.

The U.S. has the perfect opportunity to stop the genocide in Darfur when it takes over the presidency of the U.N Security Council this February. A massive call-in campaign will target the U.S. mission to the U.N. Wednesday and a rally for Darfur will take place at the White House Thursday.

ActionAid India's third country strategy paper of India is called Rights First. It will serve as the organisation's guide for the years 2005 to 2010 and will help ActionAid work on tribals, dalits and Muslims - which are the marginalised communities in India.

Brazil's president Lula is not coming to this year's World Social Forum, being held this week in Venezuela. He has a lot of work to do at home to prepare his beleaguered party for November's elections, and his role as champion of Latin America's left may be usurped by one of three local colleagues: Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, Argentina's Nestor Kirchner, or Bolivia's Evo Morales.

As the first leg of this year's World Social Forum drew to a close in West Africa Monday, participants noted the decidedly "Afrocentric" focus of the event. Despite minor administrative glitches, participants discussed issues ranging from women's rights to the conflict in the Sudan, and shuttled between more than 800 events and activities.

African leaders rightly rejected SudanÂ’s bid for the African UnionÂ’s presidency this year, but should not reward Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir with AfricaÂ’s leadership next year as long as the human rights disaster continues in Darfur, a leading rights group said.

Senior members of the Communist Party of India, along with Pakistani-born British writer and filmmaker Tariq Ali, will lead anti-US protests, labelled Anti-Imperialist Day, in New Delhi on Tuesday. The aim is to mobilise public opinion to demand withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, oppose military action against Iran, North Korea and Syria and express solidarity with the Palestinian people.
