The trial of two Internews employees charged with conspiracy in Uzbekistan began last week. Many fear the current draft of Iraq's constitution would set back the once-powerful women's movement in the country by 50 years or more, subordinating women's human rights guarantees to subjective interpretations of Islam under Sharia law. Furthermore, says MADRE Associate Director Yifat Susskind, varying religious interpretations of the law could increase tensions among groups, further endangering Iraqis and undermining democracy.

The U.S. Voting Rights Act of 1965 has been key to breaking down barriers to full political participation faced by ethnic minorities and others. Without Congress reauthorization, three key components of the act that maintain jurisdictions with a history of segregation and discrimination will expire, and the gains of the past will be lost, says Global Exchange.
