A female Iraqi member of parliament, who had no security detail and was forced to rely on her own sons for protection, was shot and killed at her home in Baghdad Wednesday. Threats against Iraqi women leaders and women working for the United States have been escalating over the past year, says the Feminist Majority Foundation.

The Croatian Women Network reported on April 17 that the Bureau of Associations (established by the Government to pursue professional and other activities related to creation of conditions for partner relations and inter-sectoral cooperation with the NGO sector) contradicts, with its actions, the goals and aims for which it was set up, as pursuant to the Directive on Associations.

The Indian government has promised to address issues related to gender-based violence in its upcoming planning document – the eleventh five-year plan – to be implemented in year 2007. UNICEFÂ’s latest Progress for Children report says that though more girls are going to school worldwide, the gender gap in many regions is still very high. The report says the number of children not in school may have dropped for the first time, to below 100 million, but the world will miss the goal of universal primary education by 2015 unless there is a dramatic jump in the number of children who go to school.
