27.10.2006 More than a year after Imrana, a Muslim woman from a western UP village, defied clerics and village elders and complained that she had been raped by her father-in-law, a Muzaffarnagar district court today sentenced the accused, Ali Mohammed, to ten years in prison, holding him guilty of rape and criminal intimidation.

13.10.2006 The courts tend to take an insensitive stand on the multiple, and often contradictory, versions of victims/survivors of gender violence – whether it’s Zaheera Sheikh of the Best Bakery case or a woman widowed in the 1984 riots. Surely the trauma of the individual concerned should be taken into consideration?

In the Asia-Pacific region, girls' labour, official and unofficial, continues to constitute a major obstacle to accelerating progress towards achieving gender parity and equality in primary and secondary education by 2015. This policy brief summarises the causes and consequences of girls' child labour on their educational opportunities and describes some of the instruments and strategies in place to reduce girls' labour.
