More than a year after Imrana, a Muslim woman from a western UP village, defied clerics and village elders and complained that she had been raped by her father-in-law, a Muzaffarnagar district court today sentenced the accused, Ali Mohammed, to ten years in prison, holding him guilty of rape and criminal intimidation.

The much-awaited law against domestic violence comes into force on October 26, 2006. Touted as a “landmark” pro-women legislation, the Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act, 2005 seeks to address issues linked to status of women within their homes that often gets pushed under the carpet.

Centre for Women Studies announces the opening of enrolment for the new Women Studies programme. The enrolments term starts on October 19 and will end on October 27, 2006. Candidates will be received between 17:00 and 20:00 hours, every weekday, at the Centre for Women Studies in Zagreb (Berislaviceva 12).

The VESTA association from Tuzla started the implementation of its “Campaign for respect of Rights of Children and Women through the K.R.I.K. (Campaign Development and Implementation Coordinator)” project. The project aims to secure the establishment of an advocacy platform for the rights of vulnerable groups of citizens and raise the public awareness in B&H about their needs.

Udruženje VESTA iz Tuzle je počelo realizaciju projekta "Kampanja za poštivanje prava djece i žena u BiH putem mreže K.R.I.K (Koordinatora za Razvoj i Implementaciju Kampanja)". Cilj projekta je obezbjeđivanje platforme za zagovaranje prava osjetljivih grupa građana i podizanje svijesti javnosti o njihovim potrebama u Bosni i Hercegovini.

Provoked by the fact that, 15 years after the start of wars in former Yugoslavia, no information has been presented on war crimes committed in the name of Serbia, Women in Black started the Women Ask action, to ask the authorities to bring the information on those crimes to the light of the day.

The courts tend to take an insensitive stand on the multiple, and often contradictory, versions of victims/survivors of gender violence – whether it’s Zaheera Sheikh of the Best Bakery case or a woman widowed in the 1984 riots. Surely the trauma of the individual concerned should be taken into consideration?
