30.11.2006 Under the “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” campaign, the Anima Centre for Women and Peace Studies from Kotor sent an open letter to the Montenegrin Parliament, Government, political parties, the Parliamentary Committee on Gender Equality and the Office of Gender Equality, with the demand that the status of women as constitutional part of the state body is confirmed in the preparation of the new Constitution of Montenegro.

Violence against Women, the Dalit Networks around the globe orgainsed International Conference to discuss the issues of discrimination and violence against more than 100 million Dalit women in South Asia. Dalit women from South Asia are determined to ‘’transform their pain into power’’ and the Hague Declaration on the Human Rights and Dignity of Dalit women’’ the participants urged the governments of Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka as well as the international community to support their struggle.

Substantial progress has been achieved in addressing the issue violence against women over the period. However, there is increased violence in societies today, and a continuing gap between political commitment and adequate resources. The key challenge that remains is to move the issue from awareness that it is a human rights violation and a crime, to making it socially unacceptable and counter to community norms.

Now a new study by the Finnish researcher Jenni Kellokumpu brings a new clarity to the issue. Motherhood's negative impact on the wages and salaries of mothers of young children is significant.

Women don't seem to be doing too badly in India, when we consider just South Asia. India's gender-related development index (GDI) rank is 96 out of 177 countries, one of the best in the region if we do not count Sri Lanka, way ahead at rank 68. But, as always, the ranking hides more than it reveals about gender equality.
