Stockholm: Ruth Manorama a Dalit herself, 'for her commitment over Dalit women's causes, has bagged the 2006 Right Livelihood Award, better known as Alternate Nobel Prize, it was announced by Akob von Uexkull, the founder of the awards, during a ceremony at the Swedish Foreign Ministry's press room on Thursday.

Meena Day 2006 was celebrated in Dhaka and around the country on Saturday September 23rd. The theme of Meena Day this year was: Chhele Meye bibhed nai, jonmo nibondhon shobar chai meaning 'Birth registration for all, be it a boy or girl' - to draw attention to the priority the Government of Bangladesh has attached to Universal Birth Registration by 2008.

Since its inception in January 1984, The Faculty of Gender Studies at the National Institute of Rural Development has developed expertise on planning, management of women development programmes and self-help groups, issues relating to gender, entrepreneurship development, empowerment, etc. It conducts training, research and consultancy programmes regularly on these. The upcoming TOT is going to be held at NIRD, Hyderabad from 23-28th October, 2006.

Governments must do more to address the human rights violations and lack of opportunities that force women and girls, who make up half the worldÂ’s 95 million migrants, to leave their homes, while countries need to work together to make migration safer and in particular stamp out human trafficking, according to new reports issued today by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Dominican Republic women who migrated abroad to earn more money were empowered by their new roles as household breadwinners and decision-makers but were still expected to conform to traditional gender roles, according to a study released today by the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW).

A 2004 survey by political scientists Zoya Hasan and Ritu Menon found that key social indicators for Muslim women were more worrying than for other social groups. Examples exist of women who have broken away from the “compulsion of wearing long black robes” but the choice isn’t so easy for many others. Seema Chishti reflects in the Indian Express.

The Crime in India manual for 2005 compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has reinforced DelhiÂ’s image as a metro unsafe for women. The Capital has the highest rate of crime against women, 27.6 per lakh population, which is twice the national average of 14.2.
