US organisation Save the Children recently released its annual publication - State of the WorldÂ’s Mothers Report. The report also highlights child mortality rates in developing countries including the Child Survival Progress Rankings of 60 countries, which together account for 94 per cent of all child deaths worldwide.

During last weekÂ’s debate in the Sabor (Croatian Parliament) on the report submitted by Gender Equality Ombudsperson, Karmela Caparin, an MP from the ruling HDZ (Croatian Democratic Community), said that there is more discrimination in labour and employment now, compared to previous years. In her view, the main cause for such regression is the insufficient public visibility of the work done by the Ombudsperson. The Croatian Women Network reacted strongly to that statement, but also to the debate in general.

The Ombudsperson for Gender Equality and Government Committee for monitoring and evaluation of implementation of gender equality policies reacted to the beer commercial of “Zagrebacka pivovara” brewery, that goes with the slogan “Zuja’s Law No.11: Men notice only the important stuff”. The said commercial depicts a woman coming home with bags filled with groceries – after she went to hairdresser to get done for her man – but he totally ignores her showing interest only for beer bottles.

The Indian government, in its upcoming planning commission meeting on strategies to boost agriculture and its output, is set to address women's right to land. Moving forward on the proposed 30 percent resource allocation for women in XI five year plan, this meeting will address the need to include women's access and control over land, infrastructure support, ICT and technical knowhow, credit, inputs and marketing as a move towards recognizing and enhancing their contribution to growth in the agriculture sector.

The fourth annual Global Monitoring Report 2007 on the Millennium Development Goals was released on April 13. The annual report assesses progress and emerging priorities of nations and financial institutions on meeting the MDGs. This year's report focuses on gender equality and problems of fragile states where poverty is extreme.

Last night, the fifth Queer Zagreb festival started with the play "Oedipus in Corinth", directed by Ivica Buljan. The Festival will last for six days and this years edition will deal with the topic of "Balkans Queer".
