La couverture de l'information algérienne par les médias étrangers est menacée par une nouvelle décision du ministère de la Culture et de la Communication, qui désormais refuse d'accréditer un même journaliste pour plusieurs médias étrangers. Un décret devrait être prochainement adopté pour entériner cette mesure.

It is barely a quarter of the year since the first phase of The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was held in December 2003 to discuss ways in which the Information Society, could address issues of accessibility and how the dissemination of information for development could be made easier than ever before in the world, through the use of communication tools such as Internet, radio, TV, telephones, etc, collectively known as Information and Communications Technologies (ICT's).

Fifteen journalists are still languishing in Eritrean prisons nearly two years after a crackdown on the independent media, according to Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières, RSF) and the Association of Eritrean Journalists in Exile (AEJE).

More journalists were killed in the line of duty in 2003 than in any other year in almost a decade, according to two major international press watchdogs, Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in New York. Eritrea is one of the countries with a poor press freedom record.

At last night's prestigious BAFTA ceremony in London, Peter Armstrong, co-founder of OneWorld, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement award for being "an inspiration to us all," "an innovator in the truest sense" and for playing "a key role in shaping the UK's hugely vibrant and creative new media industry that we are celebrating at today's BAFTAs," in the words of Baroness Blackstone.

The status of media in Eritrea has not changed in a long time. More than a dozen journalists most of them from the private press, who have been blamed of spying for the enemy state, Ethiopia, are still in prison and their fate is unknown. At present not a single private paper is published from Eritrea.

Media organizations in Zambia staged a series of events to push for the re-introduction of the Freedom of Expression bill in the current session of parliament. The last of these was a march by media practitioners and civil society organizations urging the masses to join the freedom of Information campaign.

As a journalist, any kind of oppression of the media saddens me profoundly. My heart is heavy as I read, hear and watch the media oppressions in Zimbabwe. I ask myself, is too much to ask if we can only work in a conducive environment in our quest to provide information?

The State of the Media Report is an assessment of the media environment carried by the Media Institute of Southern Africa-Zimbabwe Chapter (MISA-Zimbabwe). The report looks at the operational environment of media practitioners and media organisations. Particular attention is paid to media and freedom of expression violations as these demonstrate the extent to which the media is free or otherwise in a given state.
