United Nations special envoy Anna Tibaijukas report on Zimbabwe's Operation Murambatsvina has continued to attract heavy media attention. But while the private media in the country have carried fairly investigative and balanced reports on the topic, the government-controlled medias coverage is rigid, characterised by shrill defence of governments implementation of Murambatsvina while simultaneously parading the clampdowns mop-up successor, Operation Garikai, as a worthy programme.

Residents of south Delhi can now make themselves heard as they the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is about to begin its own community radio channel within the next two weeks. The Jamia Milia University was the first to set up such a project in Delhi two months ago.

Ugandan authorities have shut down a prominent independent radio station after it aired a talk show about the July helicopter crash that killed southern Sudanese leader John Garang, according to local sources. The suspension came a day after President Yoweri Museveni threatened to shut down any news outlet that "plays around with regional security."

While Tanzanian journalists enjoy a relatively vibrant and free press, those who live in Zanzibar - a semi-autonomous island off the mainland coast - are not so fortunate, reports RAP21 (the African Press Network for the 21st Century). Most newspapers are state-owned and steer clear of criticising the government. Those that do, pay a high price.
