The new Bill to ban incitement to religious hatred has now passed its third reading in the House of Commons and goes to the Lords. Who could be better qualified than Salman Rushdie to provide some clear thinking on this "bad law" which threatens deep traditions of freedom of speech in the UK?

Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen who was forced out of Bangladesh after her novel said that Quran - the holy book of the Muslims - was unfair to women has applied to live in the Indian city of Kolkata. She is currently residing in Sweden.

International media organisations RSF, CPJ and IFJ have said that though the Nepalese king has restored Internet and telephone connections, authorities continue to censor media outlets and arrest dissidents. A new series of directives say that those who ignore the ban on negative reporting face imprisonment or house arrest.

The CRIS Campaign released a statement to the Social Assemblies of the World Social Forum putting the spotlight on communication rights violations in Tunisia, the host country for the 2005 World Summit on the Information society. The statement also lays out CRIS' support for proposals at UNESCO for a strong international convention to promote and defend cultural diversity - a step which could provide a legislative defence for nations contesting damaging international free trade agreements.
