The World Association of Newspaper's (WAN) half-year review of press freedom worldwide says that freedom of expression, the safety of journalists and media development are under siege in most regions of the world.

Demanding immediate withdrawal of the ban on news and informative programmes broadcast, Radio Journalists in Nepal have announced protest programmes. The government banned news broadcasts on FM radio after the royal coup took place in February this year.

Les grandes organisations de défense de la liberté de la presse, dont des membres de l'IFEX, pressent l'Union africaine (UA) d'adopter un traité à l'échelle du continent afin d'enchâsser le droit à la liberté d'expression, et soutiennent que cette organisation intergouvernementale doit reconnaître formellement le rôle des médias dans la promotion d'une bonne gouvernance.

The Nepal Press Council has sought written explanation from Nepalese media organisation - Kantipur Publications - regarding a published news item in Kantipur Daily and The Kathmandu Post on May 21 that claimed the government has prepared a strict law to tighten its grip over the media.

For the first time in Fidel Castro's Cuba, the government allowed a meeting of dissidents to speak their government criticisms freely and openly. The historic meeting, named the "Congress for Democracy in Cuba," was held last weekend and drew 168 participants from all sectors of society, calling for the release of political prisoners, a halt to capital punishment, and a return to multiparty politics.

Le gouvernement tunisien omet d'agir véritablement pour mettre fin aux violations des droits de la personne dans le pays, ce qui remet en question son statut de pays hôte du Sommet mondial sur la société de l'information (SMSI) de novembre 2005, dit le Groupe de l'IFEX chargé de la surveillance de la Tunisie (TMG), une coalition composée de 13 membres de l'IFEX qui suit de près les violations de la libre expression dans ce pays d'Afrique du Nord.

In a major victory for net journalists, the Indian government plans to give accredition to journalists writing for the Internet. This recognition will also include bloggers. The government decision has been influenced by the fact that the Internet has become a way of life for Indians in urban centres.

The website was launched on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day May 3 and will allow journalists to share views on the media as well as opinions on democracy, development and human rights in Asia.

The controversial King of Nepal has lifted the state of emergency which has been in force since February. Nobody really understands what this may mean, not least because media restrictions remain as tight as ever.

The International News Safety Institute (INSI) has launched an inquiry to find out the reasons behind the rising death toll of journalists the world over and will offer solutions for reducing violence against media persons. The inquiry will be headed by director of BBC Global News Richard Sambrook and will address legal, professional and practical issues related to protection of journalists.
