28.11.2006 Community radio is set to move from the margins to the centre with the Union
Government's decision to legitimise it, said Ashish Sen, director of voices.
According to the policy guidelines, non-governmental organisations and other non-profit organisations will be able to apply for community radio licences.

The objectives of improved access and increased participation, reduced drop-out rates and enhanced learning achievements cannot be met and sustained without improving the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of teacher in the elementary education system.

The Union Cabinet of India now sanctioned the establishment of community radio stations, albeit with qualifications. Under the policy, resident welfare associations, NGOs working in rural areas, and public trusts registered under the Societies Act and in existence for at least three years can open community radio stations.
